STATEMENT BY HUMANITY FORWARD IN HONOR OF MARTIN LUTHER KING JR.

January 18

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

WASHINGTON, D.C —
“I’m now convinced that the simplest approach will prove to be the most effective — the solution to poverty is to abolish it directly by a now widely discussed measure: the guaranteed income." -Martin Luther King Jr., Where Do We Go From Here: Chaos or Community? (1967).
Humanity Forward is renewing its call for a universal basic income today, on Martin Luther King Jr. Day, echoing the late Civil Rights icon who sought the abolition of poverty.
Dr. King wrote extensively on his thoughts of UBI in his final book, detailing how it could eliminate poverty, health, housing, and education disparities, and even mitigate domestic strife.
In all of these issues, there remains a plight for minority communities in the United States, and Dr. King recognized that this suffering was unnecessary. There is enough food in this country to feed everyone, enough housing to eliminate homelessness, enough work to employ everyone, and enough medicine to treat everyone as best we can. Among those in poverty, there is no shortage of worth for the American dream. There is only a shortage of cash.
Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was a champion for the idea that all Americans have intrinsic worth. That’s why he was an early advocate for universal basic income, which would free tens of millions of Americans, many Black and brown, from the bondage of poverty.
Universal Basic Income is the bipartisan solution for America’s future. It has seen surging support among Americans of all political persuasions in the past two years, with at least 67% of voters in both parties supporting monthly direct cash relief in both political parties, and clear majorities supporting a full UBI. Members of both parties in Congress have voiced support for either recurring direct cash relief or universal basic income. Humanity Forward’s long term goal remains to establish an unconditional universal basic income in the United States.
We thank and honor Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. for reminding us that UBI is also a crucial step toward ending racism as we know it.
Humanity Forward is a 501(c)(4) non-profit organization dedicated to building bipartisan coalitions to advance the economic interests and policy priorities of the American people.
